His efforts for more than four decades helped countless youth prepare for a successful future. He began his career in Dallas ISD as an English Teacher at James Madison High School, held numerous positions includ- ing Director of the Teacher Education Center, Division Executive of Professional Development, Associate Superintendent of Alternative Programs and Assistant Superintendent of Elementary Schools.

Served as Dallas ISD School Board Trustee (1992-2004), elected Board President in 1992 and again in 2003. He was a strong supporter of mathematics, advanced placement programs, and parental involvement.

DR. GWENDOLYN CLARK

Began her teaching career in Terrell, Texas. For more than three decades, she served in Dallas ISD as elementary Teacher, Resource Teacher, Facilitator and Elementary Principal. She served as a board member for numerous community organizations including the AARP as Texas Minority Affairs spokesperson.

Served as Vice-President of the DISD Board of Trustees (1984-1986) and first African American male President (1986-1987). He served as a mediator on many occasions to achieve an equitable resolution of issues related to education involving parents, students, faculty and the community.

REV. ZAN WESLEY HOLMES, JR

Pastor of St. Luke Community United Methodist Church for 41 years. Served on the Tri-Ethnic Committee to pave the way for a non-violent implementation of the 1971 Court Order, Professor at Perkins School of Theology at SMU and served in the Texas Legislature. DISD School named in his honor.

Began her career in Dallas as an Elementary Teacher and pursued a rewarding career in Counseling. She later served as a central office Administrator for Dallas ISD as Director of Student Services. She was active in numerous community organizations.

NELLIE R. LEWIS

NELLIE R. LEWIS

Respected educator and volunteer whose career spanned almost fifty years. Seventeen of those were In the Washington, D.C. Schools before coming to Dallas. Served as area Director for Learning Centers and Administrative Assistant to four Superintendents, past President - dr/NABSE (Dallas Chapter), and worked with the Young Educators Group at Paul Quinn College.

Served forty-four years in Dallas ISD and first Principal of Lincoln High School. His tenure marked by high ideals, improved curriculum and methodology. Remembered for his fearless leadership when Lincoln opened under the threat of bombings. Began the Wiley College Extension Program and is known as the “Father of Higher Education” in the African American community. DISD School named in his honor.

Nationally recognized for his work in student services, he orchestrated social, health, family and educational services for a diverse population in Dallas ISD. He served as Director, Deputy Associate Superintendent and Assistant Superintendent.

Teacher of Math, Science and Music. Served as an elementary and middle school Counselor, first African American President of the Classroom Teachers of Dallas, President of Texas Credit Union, Chairman of the DISD Benefits Committee, Parliamentarian for the DISD Board.
