The Dallas Police Department, in partnership with McShan Florist, recently took part in the #PetalItForward campaign—a national initiative aiming to promote kindness, joy, and stronger community connections. As part of this uplifting effort, officers surprised Dallas residents with flower deliveries, offering moments of generosity and encouragement across the city.
One notable recipient was Verna Mitchell, a respected leader in Dallas civic affairs and the Senior Affairs Commissioner for City Council District 3. To honor her steadfast dedication to serving the community, Verna received a vibrant floral arrangement, a gesture of thanks and recognition for her impactful contributions. Her leadership is especially evident through the annual Senior Conversation event she sponsors, which gathers over 100 local seniors to provide them with essential information, resources, and support, all tailored to improve their well-being. Through these efforts, Verna has built a spirit of unity and compassion among Dallas’s senior population.
Verna Mitchell’s commitment to service is deeply rooted in her lifelong dedication to education. With 35 years of experience in Dallas ISD, she has served as Principal of Maynard H. Jackson Elementary School, master teacher, teacher trainer, and at Christian Academy. Her expertise and leadership were further recognized through her appointment by the late Governor Ann Richards to the State ESEA Committee and her selection to attend the prestigious Principal’s Institute at Harvard University. Verna’s career achievements include receiving the Legend in Education Award from the Dallas Urban League, affirming her lasting influence and legacy in the field of education. Mitchell was inducted into the AAEAHP ‘s Educators Hall of Fame in 2015.
