The TEACH
Project
The TEACH Project At DeSoto High School
The TEACH Project is an initiative launched at DeSoto High School during the Fall semester of 2023. Endorsed by former Principal Jasen Campbell and led by classroom teacher Rachel Bolden, the program is designed to prepare students for careers in education, exposing them to a variety of fields within the profession. The project is supported by the African American Education Archives and History Program (AAEAHP), which partners with the school to offer unique learning and leadership opportunities for participating students.
The primary purpose of the TEACH Project is to encourage and equip high school students to pursue careers as educators. Through a combination of classroom instruction, hands-on experiences, and community involvement, students gain valuable insights into the education profession while developing skills necesary for future success.
Student Activities in the TEACH Project
- Weekly Volunteering: Students dedicate one day each week volunteering at Woodridge Elementary School in DeSoto ISD, gaining practical experience in a real school setting.
- College Field Tours: Participants take part in college visits, including trips to the University of North Texas in 2024 (Denton, TX) and Texas A & M University-Commerce in 2025. These tours help students explore higher education options and learn about teacher preparation programs.
- AAEAHP Events: TEACH Project students volunteer at AAEAHP-sponsored events, contributing to community efforts and networking with professional educators.
- Community Service Awards: Students are recognized for their service and leadership through Community Service Awards.
- Guest Speaker Engagements: Students attend guest lectures, such as the session with Chris Dyer, after whom the DeSoto High School gym is named.
- Scholarships: Three students in the program have received scholarships from AAEAHP, supporting their educational aspirations.
