Honoring a Hall of Fame Educator: Marilyn Calhoun’s Lifelong Commitment to Excellence

Marilyn Gibson Calhoun, an esteemed recipient of the African American Education Archives and History Program Hall of Fame (2016), has left an indelible mark on the Dallas education landscape. Born in Dallas, Texas, Calhoun built a career spanning over 30 years, dedicated to enriching the lives of students and educators within the Dallas Independent School District (DISD). Calhoun’s journey in education began in 1968 when she accepted a position as a health science teacher in DISD. Over the course of her career, she held a variety of influential roles, including science demonstration teacher, K-12 science curriculum writer, principal, and instructional specialist. Through these positions, she contributed significantly to the development of educational programs and fostered academic excellence across the district.

Known for her leadership and expertise, Calhoun was frequently called upon to serve in a range of educational and civic capacities. She worked as a speaker, trainer, consultant, and administrator for restructured schools, generously sharing her knowledge with colleagues. Calhoun developed targeted strategies to support students identified as at-risk, helping to close achievement gaps and empower youth throughout Dallas.

Some of her notable achievements include —

 

  • Played a pivotal role in developing educational products and strategies for classroom science curricula, elementary instruction, and GED distance learning.
  • Provided guidance to African American educators participating in the National Endowment for the Humanities Harlem Renaissance Summer Institute, enabling them to enrich classroom materials with authentic perspectives on the period’s history and culture.
  • Served as principal of the Daniel “Chappie” James Learning Center, where she launched an innovative after-school enrichment program in collaboration with the African American Museum. This initiative, known as the Daniel Higher Learning Tour, engaged more than 100 students and staff in meaningful educational experiences.

Marilyn Gibson Calhoun’s legacy is defined by her unwavering commitment to advancing educational opportunities and her leadership within the Dallas community. Her contributions continue to inspire educators and students alike, ensuring that her impact endures for generations to come.
