The Sankofa Children’s Center Book Club launched its very first session in October, featuring the book A Weed is a Flower by Aliki. This engaging biography introduces young readers to the life of George Washington Carver, tracing his remarkable journey from enslavement to becoming one of the nation’s most influential scientists and educators. During the session, participants explored a detailed historical timeline of Carver’s life and achievements. They learned about his enduring impact on agricultural science, including his development of over 300 innovative uses for peanuts and 108 uses for sweet potatoes. The inaugural book club meeting sparked curiosity and encouraged a deeper understanding of history among the students. It also helped foster a greater appreciation for the significant contributions African Americans have made to STEM fields. The thoughtful discussion and engaging activities set a positive precedent for future sessions of the Sankofa Children’s Center Book Club. Johnnie Brashear, AAEAHP Hall of Famer 2018, is coordinator for the book club.
