The excitement at DeSoto High School’s Chris Dyer Gym was evident on Saturday, Nov. 15, as the African American Education Archives and History Program (AAEAHP) hosted its highly anticipated Free Throw Challenge. The gym buzzed with energy, thanks to a group of enthusiastic supporters, local celebrities, and basketball fans, all rallying behind a powerful cause—raising funds for scholarships, the Sankofa Children’s Center at the African American Museum, The TEACH project and other AAEAHP initiatives. Attendees were welcomed by DeSoto ISD Superintendent Dr. Usamah Rodgers who kicked off the event with AAEAHP President Lincoln Butler Sr., and Dr. Larry D. Lewis, AAEAHP Director of Community Partnerships.
In a display of remarkable focus and skill, DeSoto High School Sophomore Darius Howard emerged in first place for this year’s Free Throw Challenge making 45 out of 50 free throws. Showing up big too and making 40+ shots were Noah Anthony, Jeff Fudge and Benny Franklin. Hanging pretty close and making 30+ shots were Michael Spencer, Kendrick Walton, Devoe Ward, Dr. Larry Lewis, Lincoln Butler Sr. and Dallas City Councilman Zarin Gracey.
Popular radio host Donovan Lewis, 1310/96.7 The Ticket, serving as Emcee, kept the energy high and the crowd engaged with his trademark enthusiasm. Notable figures like Casey Thomas, Gayelord Gray, Dr. Kesha O’Reilly, Dr. Cinnamon Sheffield and Sylvia Perry stepped onto the court as shooters, adding an extra layer of excitement. DJ Tr3mendous provided a lively soundtrack, ensuring every moment was filled with joy and anticipation. Also, in the house and taking a few shots were State Senator Royce West and State Representative Aicha Davis.
